What are the Stages of Sleep?
Understanding SleepAside from being an important component in making sure your mind and body function properly, sleeping takes up about one-third of your time. From removing toxins from your brain to forming neural pathways, your mind and body do incredible things while you’re still asleep – all of which is extremely essential for a healthy lifestyle.
However, the composition of a night’s sleep isn’t as simple as you might think. It involves about four to six sleep cycles, with each cycle containing multiple rounds or stages of sleep. It’s also worth noting that while not all of these cycles are made up of the same length, they last for about 90 minutes each and can vary in terms of duration based on factors like physical health, age, night schedules, etc.
Stages of Sleep
Sleep can be largely dissected into two types:
- Rapid Eye Movement (REM) – which comprises of one stage
- Non-REM (NREM) – which comprises of three stages
